The M44 155mm Self-Propelled Howitzer is an American-designed artillery vehicle that played a significant role in the post-World War II era.
Overview and Technical Profile
Designation: Developed as a successor to the M41 “Gorilla,” the M44 was designed to provide mobile, protected artillery support for armored and mechanized divisions.
Armament: It features a 155mm M45 howitzer mounted in an open-topped, rear-facing turret on a chassis derived from the M41 Walker Bulldog light tank.
Mobility: Powered by an Ordnance Continental AOS-895-3 six-cylinder air-cooled engine, the vehicle achieved a top speed of approximately 56 km/h (35 mph) on roads.
Operational Configuration: The open-topped turret design, while exposing the crew to the elements, provided excellent visibility for the gun crew during fire missions and allowed for easier loading of heavy 155mm ammunition.
Operational Importance
Transition Vehicle: The M44 served as an important bridge in artillery technology, transitioning from the open-mount designs of the early Cold War toward fully enclosed, turreted self-propelled guns like the M109.
International Service: Beyond the U.S. Army, the M44 was exported to several NATO allies, including the United Kingdom, West Germany, Italy, and Turkey, where it remained in various stages of service well into the 1970s.
Tactical Flexibility: Its ability to keep pace with armored units allowed artillery commanders to provide fire support at the “point of contact,” a critical tactical requirement that had been difficult to meet with towed artillery pieces.
Note on Mod Attribution
Origin: Please note that I am not the original author of this 3D model; the base model is sourced from Farming Simulator.
Conversion: This unit has been converted by me from previous versions (FS17) to the current version (FS25).
Contribution: My work focused on implementing the necessary animations, configuring the functional systems, and performing technical edits to ensure the vehicle operates correctly within the Farming Simulator 25 environment.
